Backup Agents

Give any seat on an agent org chart or pipeline an ordered list of backup agents. When the agent in that seat crashes, exits out of quota, or stops responding, the next backup opens in its place with the conversation so far — so the run continues instead of stalling on one dead terminal.

Why You Need This

How this feature boosts your daily productivity

A multi-agent run is only as reliable as its weakest seat. Before backup agents, a single crash or an exhausted quota froze every agent downstream of the one that died, and recovering meant noticing, finding the dead seat, restarting it by hand, and re-explaining everything it had already been told. Backup agents turn that dead stop into an automatic hand-off: the seat fills itself from a list you set, the work keeps moving, and you only get involved if the whole chain of backups runs out.

How It Works

Get started in 4 simple steps

1
1

Open a seat in Charts

Open a seat in the Charts builder and find Assignment on the right, with a Backup agents section beneath Terminal when starting.

2
2

Add backups in order

Click Add backup agent to stack up to three, each with its own agent, model and Terminal when starting preset.

3
3

Let a real death trigger the swap

When the primary agent's process actually dies, the next backup opens in the seat and inherits the transcript so far.

4
4

Or switch by hand

One click on a live-but-stuck seat hands it to the next backup; the active team labels the change as took over from.

Without 1DevTool

The manual way vs. the 1DevTool way

The Hard Way

# an agent dies mid-run at 2am
# notice nothing has moved for 40 min
# work out which seat went dark
# restart the agent by hand
# re-explain everything it was told
# the rest of the team waited the whole time

The 1DevTool Way

Add 1-3 backups to the seat, in order
A real death -> the next backup opens itself
It inherits the conversation so far
The team never stops
The log reads: backup 1 took over from codex

Key Capabilities

Everything included with Backup Agents

Stack up to three backup agents behind any seat, tried in the order you set
Give each backup its own Terminal when starting preset so it launches configured
Swap automatically only on a real death — a crash, out-of-quota exit or unresponsive API
Carry the conversation so far into the backup so it resumes instead of starting cold
Keep manual tab closes, app quits and restarts from ever counting as a failure
Switch a live-but-stuck seat to its next backup by hand in one click
Read backup 1 · took over from codex in the active team so hand-offs stay visible
Reuse the same backups on an org chart and a pipeline — only the seat's occupant changes
